5K and Food

On Sunday I agreed to participate in the Optimism Run for Parkinson’s Disease 5K that my wife helped create.  I was joined by my friend Natalie who really ought to have a running blog because she is obsessed.

I placed 1st in my age group and 24th overall with a time of 20:48!  NICE!  This  was 2:30 faster than my goal.

Later I had to make dinner for myself because Erin was working.  I made the best fish sandwich I have ever had.  I grilled Snapper and some onions and pablano chilies, and put fresh tomatoes on top.  I also grilled up some asparagus to go with it.  It was amazing.

I think that a big part of eating healthy is learning to cook.  Erin has turned into a great chef and it has defiantly changed how much we go out and helped me getting into better shape.

Are you sick of buying protein bars that are:  A).expensive B).full of crap you can’t pronounce or C). Both? I don’t even want to know how much we spend on bars every month because we try to buy the “natural” and “organic” ones. Chad came up with a great idea to make our own.  If you don’t care have time to make your own try Picky Bars.

Race this Weekend

So I forgot that Erin’s charity 5k was this weekend and I was expected to race.  I went out and did a hard 5k yesterday after not running for 2 weeks due to a mountain bike crash.  Now my hip hurts and my foot feels better.  I think that I am getting old.  Next I will have sciatica.

Today I am back in Monterey, CA living the hard life and again was back at the London Bridge Pub for some awesome fish and chips and an IPA.  I took a nice walk to the Warf  with my flight attendant and tried a few clam chowders.  Along the way we saw this:

$99.99

WTF  Who in their right mind would ever buy a $100 dollar lollipop.  If you buy this you’re an idiot!  If you buy this for your kids, they should be taken away from you.

A Very Funny Episode of Southpark

Since the Bangle’s cheerleader is banging one of her student I thought that I would share this epic Southpark episode with you.

2 Bikes 1 Day

This morning my friend Ryan let me borrow his Ducati monster.  Bob and I went on a nice breakfast ride and had breakfast at Cave Creek Coffee Company aka C4.  C4 has the best coffee and chorizo breakfast burritos in Phoenix.  What an awesome feeling having an Italian machine back between my legs.  I can’t wait till I can go back to GOAZ and buy a new motorcycle.

Around 3 o’clock Drew and I got on the Gnar Gnar shuttle at South Mountain and started off riding Geronimo.   The 1st ride could have went better.  I broke my rear brake lever right at the beginning.

Luck for me there was still enough left to ride.  We then moved on to Holbert which is a chunky mess.  I did have to walk a few sections but overall it went great.  This was very encouraging.  We decided to do Geronimo one more time and it went much better.  We got to ride with Gene Hamilton from betterride.net.  What a pleasure he was a great down to earth guy.  No big crashes today.  Tomorrow back out on the cross-country trails.  I am loving this bike it does everything.

Into the Wild

This past weekend we went backpacking in the Superstition Mountains.  Friday was supposed to be the easy night.  We stayed at Canyon Lake Campground and Marina.  Cooking the hamburgers on a grate (that we had to supply) was not as easy as it looks.  We lost many hamburgers to the fire.  The bathrooms here were disgusting. Oh an did I mention there were street lights that never go off.  That being said we were on the water, the beer was cold, and the s’mores were delicious.

Saturday morning we loaded up our packs and were off on Boulder Canyon trail into the wild.  Hiking is very different with a 40lb backpack.  We picked one of the hottest days of the year to hike in.  Erin says it was 95.  We encountered some wild life along the way and the girls flipped out.  I am not saying I love rattlesnakes but you would have thought a mountain lion was ready to strike.  5 minutes later another one rattles at us and this one was a giant.  Now even I am like this could be ugly.  I mean I don’t care that they are there but are they really everywhere.  Rob and I went ahead and checked for  snakes on the path down to the dry creek.  We hiked up the creek and finally stopped for some rest.  We set up some tarps that provided a bit of shade and were thinking of camping there.  Luckily 2 other hikers walked by and said that there were pools of water up ahead.  They even gave us some iodine tablets so we could drink it.

One the way to the water my shoes gave way.

This is where we set up camp.

We boiled water and made our freeze-dried dinners as well as hot chocolate with peppermint schnapps.  In the middle of the night I am told that there was an animal rumbling around the camp site and Drew thought the mountain lions was there for him.  We never actually saw any animals around there except a box turtle earlier that was very mad that I picked him up.

The next morning we were up early to try to get back before it got hot.  We got back a lot faster but I am not going to lie my legs were trashed along with my shoes!

What a blast!  Guys always think that we are capable of living with nothing out in the wild but for most of us we would die.  I would maybe last a week if conditions are perfect and I didn’t have to rely on the survival guide that my brother downloaded to his iPhone which even included what to do if zombies attack!

I'm Optimistic, Are You?

Life or Death Get in Shape

20120328-095215.jpg

I have found that most people have no idea how to eat healthy. The first problem is that most people don’t cook. It is extremely hard for you to eat healthy and eat out for almost all meals. The second problem is that people eat so much candy and artificial food that they do not enjoy the flavors of real food.
It does not take long for your taste to change after you stop eating artificial foods. Real food can be full of flavor. Healthy food can be filling and delicious but you have to take time to plan out and cook meals.
Your health effects yourself, your marriage, your family, and you country. If you think it’s ok to put on weight when you get married look at the divorce rate. You have an obligation to your spouse to stay in shape and attractive and this goes for the men too!
The picture above says it all. Make time now or suffer the consequences later. Take the time to educate yourself on healthy eating and fitness. Find a hobby that is active such as biking, tennis, hiking, etc. Get magazines such as Natural Health, Men’s Health, or Fitness RX. Go to a Naturopathic Doctor who will be able to help you get started. Lastly, get a personal trainer. Be careful here. Look for someone that is certified through: ACSM, NASM, or has a degree in exercise physiology. You have to work hard and in the beginning it is going to hurt. Man up and suck it up. After about 3-4 weeks you are going to be feeling better and enjoying the burn. I want to you to send me some before pics now and let me know your goals. You can do it! If you have questions comment or email me.

Sedona Singletrack Festival

Yesterday I went downhilling with my brother on South Mountain.  It was scary as shit but I did buy all the pads and that really helped with the fear.  We only got one run in but I think that this is going to really help my technical skills.

Today my brother and I went to Sedona for the Singletrack Festival.  It was a blast.  We went on a group ride with Over the Edge Sports.  We went on a trail called Special Ed.  This is the descrpition on the website “A new trail on the southwest end of town, for advanced riders. Steep chunky downhills and singletrack traversing exposed bands of red rock. Loop back through Turkey Creek, Baldwin Trails, and and climb up Carroll Canyon and drop Ridge Trail back to our shop”.  It was defiantly exposed and definitely singletrack.  After feeling so good about my riding in Phoenix I felt like a beginner.  I had two awesome crashes.  One sent me directly into a Prickly Pear cactus.  I managed to save it enough where just my knee went in.  That being said I am still picking the prickles out.  The second was more serious I went over about a 4 foot ledge and the bike ended up on top of me.  No big injuries just scrapes, bruises, and thats about it.

After calming down my riding improved.  I rode behind my brother and who pretty much killed it and I did most of what he did.  The problem is that the little that he did and I did not is what really separates me.  I did walk some of the exposure sections as the penalty for falling is severe.  I need to work on my balance to get to the next level.  Great day with my bro!
